David watching

Ieri sera, facendo zapping selvaggio, sono capitata sul programma LA Ink, in un cui si raccontano le vicende professionali - e personali - di un team di tatuatori. Non sono un’appassionata di tatuaggi, ma devo ammettere che i tatuatori veri, quelli che ci sanno fare, sono degli artisti a tutti gli effetti e possiedono un’incredibile professionalità.

Tra i vari personaggi che si sono avvicendati durante la puntata, sono rimasta colpita da uno in particolare. Si tratta di Sebastian Bach, cantante canadese che prima di darsi alla carriera solista è frontman degli Skid Row. Sebastian - vero nome Sebastian Philip Bierk - si reca dall’amica Kat Von D per farsi tatuare sul braccio destro un dipinto realizzato da suo padre, David Bierk, scomparso nel 2002.

Il dipinto - del 1990 - si intitola David watching e rappresenta la statua del David di Michelangelo che dall’alto osserva una tela rappresentante Gesù, trasportata da sette uomini. Sembra che nessuno a parte Davide si curi dell’immagine di Gesù. Qui sotto potete vedere il tatuaggio realizzato.

Andando alla ricerca del dipinto, scopro che oltretutto è stato utilizzato come cover per l’ultimo album di Sebastian Bach, Angel down. Non è la prima volta che il cantante utilizza un’opera del padre come cover. Ricordiamo infatti l’album Slave to the grind, degli Skid Row. Sebastian - in alcune interviste - ha affermato che il dipinto che scelto per l’ultimo album gli è molto caro perchè la statua del David gli ricorda suo padre - che si chiama nello stesso modo - che lo osserva dall’alto del cielo.

Un estratto di un’intervista:

…when my father, David Bierk, did the Slave to the Grind cover, I really wanted to carry that on, and now that he’s no longer with us, it takes an even heavier meaning to me. So the album is called Angel Down and my dad did this cover called David Watching — he painted it back in 1990, [and] it’s a statue of David looking down on a painting of a Jesus and nobody’s paying attention to Jesus in the content of this painting. And the thing is, a lot of the lyrics of the record have to do with the war, and to me, we’ve perverted what religion is about. To kill each other over religion is completely the opposite message of what Jesus was trying to say, which was “Love each other.” Any parent with a soldier who lost his life [in the war], they’re obviously angels. And the thing is, my dad’s painting is David Watching but his name was [also] David. So it’s really that that’s the title of the painting ’cause he can’t be here anymore but he’s on the album cover and he is watching.

Non conoscevo Sebastian Bach e non avevo mai ascoltato nessuna sua canzone. Ho ascoltato By Your Side, una delle canzoni dell’ultimo album…
